Identification and Formulation of the Water Resources and Sanitation Program in Algeria

Full description of the project

Algeria maintains close relations with the European Union (EU), through an Association Agreement that has been in force since September 2005. Cooperation activities between Algeria and the EU are regulated by the National Indicative Programs (NIP).

Concerning the water sector is one of the priority areas of cooperation between Algeria and Germany, Belgium, and the EU. In particular, since 2006, European cooperation has supported a “Support Program for the Water Resources Sector.

This program aims to :

• to contribute to the sustainable satisfaction of the consumers’ water demand, to restore the quality image of the water sector
• To improve the adequacy of the actors to their missions within the framework of the integrated management of water resources and to promote water saving and the safeguard of the resource and the environment.

The expected outcomes of program implementation are:

• The National Water Plan is updated taking into account the reforms of the Algerian administration;
• The institutional, regulatory, legal, financial, human, communication, and information framework is consolidated.
