Development of Solid Waste Master Plans for the Governorates of Mafraq and Irbrid
Full description of the project
Although municipalities have constraints on communities and resources, during this Syrian refugee crisis, municipalities have been called upon to address a wide range of service delivery and socio-economic issues of their constituents.
This crisis leads the governorate of Mafraq and Irbid, which suffer from an increase in illegal dumping, improper disposal and incineration of waste that contributes to water, soil and air pollution, to install a new program that is the development of solid waste master plans for the governorates of Mafraq and Irbrid.
Overall objective
The overall objective of this contract is to contribute to instilling the principles of environmentally sound solid waste management in municipalities and Joint Service Councils (JSCs) by bringing about a significant improvement in their capacity to effectively manage domestic solid waste. In this context the Master Plan aims to critically examine prevailing waste management practices and propose recommendations for improvement, laying the foundations for short, medium and long term investment, taking into consideration the temporary but protracted nature of the Syrian refugee crisis.
Specific objectives
The specific objectives of this contract are to assist the Ministry of Municipal Affairs in preparing two solid waste master plans (domestic solid waste, including Syrian refugees) for the governorates of Irbid and Mafraq.
