Study for the Facilitation of Transport and Trade on the North-South Corridor of the Gisiza-Rubavu Road Project
Full description of the project
Overall objectives
With financial support from the African Development Bank (AfDB), the governments of the Republics of Rwanda and Burundi are implementing the Rwanda-Burundi North-South Corridor Project – Phase III. The project will :
- contribute to strengthening regional integration within the East African Community (EAC) and between the EAC and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), mainly between Rwanda and Burundi, as well as with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Tanzania;
- Improve trade within the countries concerned in order to promote socio-economic development and reduce poverty, particularly in rural areas.
In addition to the “hardware” components of the project (mainly road improvements), such as environmental and social mitigation measures, the project includes (i) a study to refine the operation of the single border post being developed at Ruhwa (located between the two corridors along the corridor), and (ii) a detailed study of additional transport and handling facilitation measures along the corridor
The aim of this mandate is to carry out a study on the facilitation of road transport and transit through the RUHWA-RUSIZI-NTENDEZI-RUBAVU/GOMA corridor.
The study is limited to the territory of Rwanda and the border crossings between the states of Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Specific objectives
The objective of this study is to assist the Republic of Rwanda in facilitating transport and trade along the corridor by addressing existing barriers, making trade and transport efficient and search-free along the corridor, and promoting transport between Rwanda, Burundi and DRC through the corridor.
